Asphalt is ordered by weight: area × compacted thickness gives volume, and volume × compacted density gives tonnes.

Also called: Blacktop calculator, Tarmac calculator.

## Inputs
- Units (options: Metric, Imperial; default metric)
- Length (default 100)
- Width (default 7)
- Compacted thickness (default 50)
- Compacted density (unit kg/m³; default 2400)
- Waste allowance (unit %; default 5; optional)

## Results
- Asphalt to order
- Asphalt to order
- Compacted volume (no waste)
- Paved area
- Paved area

## Formula

```
Tonnes = L × W × t × ρ × (1 + Waste) ÷ 1000
```

Where:
- L, W: paved length and width
- t: compacted layer thickness
- ρ: compacted density in kg/m³

## Worked example
1. Volume = 100 × 7 × 0.05 = 35 m³.
2. Mass = 35 × 2400 = 84,000 kg = 84 t.
3. With 5% waste: 84 × 1.05 = 88.2 t (97.22 US tons).

**Result:** A 100 m × 7 m road with a 50 mm course needs about 88.2 tonnes of asphalt including 5% waste.

## What the result means

Calculate each course (base, binder, surface) separately because their thickness and density differ. Loose material is laid thicker than its compacted thickness.

## Assumptions and limits
- Uniform compacted thickness over a rectangular area.
- Tack coat, kerbs and patching are not included.

## Questions

### What is a typical asphalt density?

Dense-graded hot-mix asphalt is commonly around 2.3–2.4 t/m³ when compacted, but each mix design states its own value.

### Metric tonne or US ton?

A metric tonne is 1000 kg; a US short ton is 2000 lb (907.2 kg). Both are shown.
