Overtime is paid at a multiple of your normal hourly rate. Enter the multipliers that apply under your contract or local law; time-and-a-half (1.5×) and double time (2×) are shown as examples.

Also called: Time and a half calculator, Overtime calculator.

## Inputs
- Regular hourly rate (default 20)
- Regular hours (unit hours; default 40)
- Overtime hours (unit hours; default 5)
- Overtime multiplier (unit ×; default 1.5)
- Hours at a higher overtime rate (unit hours; default 2; optional)
- Higher multiplier (unit ×; default 2; optional)
- Currency

## Results
- Total gross pay
- Regular pay
- All overtime pay
- Overtime hourly rate
- Average pay per hour worked
- Total hours

## Formula

```
Total = Rate × Regular hours + Rate × OT multiplier × OT hours + Rate × Higher multiplier × Higher-rate hours
```

Where:
- Rate: regular hourly rate
- OT multiplier: e.g. 1.5 for time-and-a-half

## Worked example
1. Regular pay = 20 × 40 = $800.
2. Overtime = 20 × 1.5 × 5 = $150; double time = 20 × 2 × 2 = $80.
3. Total = 800 + 150 + 80 = $1,030 for 47 hours, an average of $21.91 an hour.

**Result:** At $20 an hour, 40 regular hours plus 5 hours at time-and-a-half and 2 at double time pays $1,030 gross.

## What the result means

Use the total to check a payslip. When overtime is due (after 40 hours a week, 8 a day, or on rest days) and at what multiple depends on your contract and the law where you work.

## Assumptions and limits
- Overtime is calculated on the regular hourly rate you enter.
- Pay is gross, before tax and deductions.
- Some laws require bonuses or shift premiums to be included in the regular rate before the overtime multiple is applied. That adjustment is not made here.
- Salaried employees who are exempt from overtime rules may not be entitled to overtime pay.

## Questions

### What is time-and-a-half?

Pay at 1.5 times the normal hourly rate. At $20 an hour, each overtime hour pays $30.

### When does overtime start?

It depends on the country, state and contract: commonly after 40 hours a week, sometimes after 8 hours a day, and often for rest days and public holidays.
