Divide the paved area by the area of one paver plus its joint. Add a cutting allowance, and multiply the area by the bed thickness for the bedding sand.

Also called: Interlocking paver calculator, Patio block calculator.

## Inputs
- Units (options: Metric, Imperial; default metric)
- Area length (default 6)
- Area width (default 4)
- Paver length (default 200)
- Paver width (default 100)
- Joint width (default 3; optional)
- Waste allowance (unit %; default 5; optional)
- Bedding sand thickness (default 30; optional)

## Results
- Pavers to buy
- Pavers to cover the area
- Pavers per m²
- Pavers per ft²
- Paved area
- Paved area
- Bedding sand
- Bedding sand

## Formula

```
Pavers per area = 1 ÷ [(a + j)(b + j)];  Pavers = ⌈L × W × Pavers per area × (1 + Waste)⌉;  Sand = L × W × Bed
```

Where:
- a, b: paver length and width
- j: joint width

## Worked example
1. One paver = 0.2 × 0.1 = 0.02 m², so 50 per m².
2. 6 × 4 = 24 m² × 50 = 1200 pavers; with 5% waste = 1260.
3. Bedding sand = 24 × 0.03 = 0.72 m³.

**Result:** A 6 × 4 m patio in 200 × 100 mm pavers needs 1260 pavers and about 0.72 m³ of bedding sand.

## What the result means

Shaped interlocking pavers state their own count per m² on the data sheet; use that if it differs. Order sand loose and allow extra for compaction and jointing sand.

## Assumptions and limits
- Rectangular pavers on a rectangular area.
- Edge restraints, sub-base and jointing sand are not included.

## Questions

### How many pavers per square metre?

For a 200 × 100 mm paver, 50 per m² with tight joints; slightly fewer with wider joints.

### How thick should the sand bed be?

Commonly 25–40 mm after compaction, but follow the paver manufacturer’s guidance.
