Each plant occupies a rectangle of row spacing × plant spacing. Divide the area by that rectangle to get the plant population.

Also called: Plants per acre calculator, Plant density calculator.

## Inputs
- Row spacing (default 75)
- Plant spacing in the row (default 20)
- Spacing in (options: Centimetres, Inches, Metres, Feet; default cm)
- Plants per hill or station (default 1)
- Field area (default 5)
- Area in (options: Acres, Hectares; default acre)

## Results
- Plants per acre
- Plants per hectare
- Plants per square metre
- Plants in the field
- Area per plant

## Formula

```
Plants per m² = Plants per hill ÷ (Row spacing × Plant spacing, in m);  Per hectare = × 10,000;  Per acre = × 4,046.86
```

Where:
- Row spacing: distance between rows
- Plant spacing: distance between plants (or hills) along the row
- Plants per hill: plants at each planting station

## Worked example
1. Area per plant = 0.75 m × 0.20 m = 0.15 m².
2. Per hectare = 10,000 ÷ 0.15 = 66,667; per acre = 4,046.86 ÷ 0.15 = 26,979.
3. For 5 acres: 26,979.04 × 5 = 134,895 plants.

**Result:** At 75 × 20 cm spacing there are about 66,667 plants per hectare, or 26,979 per acre, which is 134,895 plants on 5 acres.

## What the result means

This is the planted population. The stand you harvest is lower after germination failures and losses, so compare it with your target established population.

## Assumptions and limits
- Spacing is uniform across the field, with no headlands or paths.
- For bed or paired-row systems, use the average row spacing across one full repeat.

## Questions

### Why is my count lower in the field?

Not every seed emerges and some seedlings die. Divide the planted population by your expected establishment to set the seed rate.

### How do I handle paired rows?

Use the width of one full repeat (the pair plus its gap) divided by the number of rows in it as the average row spacing.
