Sales tax is a percentage of the pre-tax price. Add it to get the total, or divide a total by 1 plus the rate to strip it out.

Also called: Reverse sales tax calculator.

## Inputs
- I have (options: Price before tax, Total including tax; default add)
- Amount (default 100)
- Sales tax rate (unit %; default 8.25)
- Currency

## Results
- Sales tax
- Price before tax
- Total including tax

## Formula

```
Adding: Tax = Price × Rate;  Total = Price + Tax.  Removing: Price = Total ÷ (1 + Rate);  Tax = Total − Price
```

Where:
- Rate: sales tax rate as a decimal (8.25% = 0.0825)

## Worked example
1. Tax = 100 × 0.0825 = $8.25.
2. Total = 100 + 8.25 = $108.25.
3. Check in reverse: 108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100.

**Result:** An 8.25% sales tax on $100 is $8.25, for a total of $108.25.

## What the result means

To remove tax, divide; do not subtract the rate from the total. Taking 8.25% off $108.25 gives $99.32, not the $100 pre-tax price.

## Assumptions and limits
- A single combined rate applies to the whole amount; you supply the rate.
- No rates are built in: rates vary by state, county and city, and some goods are exempt or taxed differently.
- Tax is calculated on the total, so per-item rounding at the till can differ by a cent.

## Questions

### Where do I find my sales tax rate?

Your state revenue department publishes state and local rates. The combined rate is often printed on receipts.

### Is VAT or GST the same calculation?

Yes, adding or removing a percentage tax works the same way. For Indian GST use the GST Calculator, which handles CGST and SGST.
