A step-up (or top-up) SIP raises the monthly instalment once a year, usually in line with pay rises. Small yearly increases make a large difference to the final value.

Also called: Top-up SIP calculator, Increasing SIP calculator.

## Inputs
- Starting monthly SIP (default 5000)
- Increase by (options: Percentage, Fixed amount; default percent)
- Yearly step-up (default 10)
- Expected return (per year) (unit %; default 12)
- Time period (unit years; default 10)
- Currency (default INR)

## Results
- Estimated value
- Total invested
- Estimated gains
- Monthly SIP in the final year

## Formula

```
Each month: Value = (Value + SIP) × (1 + r), with r = annual return ÷ 12 ÷ 100. After every 12 months: SIP = SIP × (1 + step-up%) or SIP + step-up amount
```

Where:
- SIP: the monthly instalment for the current year
- r: expected monthly return
- step-up: the yearly increase in the instalment

## Worked example
1. Year 1 SIP is ₹5,000; it rises 10% each year to ₹11,789.74 in year 10.
2. Total invested = 12 × 5,000 × (1.1¹⁰ − 1) ÷ 0.1 = ₹9,56,245.48.
3. Growing each instalment at 1% a month to the end of year 10 gives ₹16,87,163.13.

**Result:** A ₹5,000 SIP stepped up 10% a year for 10 years at 12% could grow to about ₹16.9 lakh, against ₹11.6 lakh for a flat ₹5,000 SIP.

## What the result means

Compare the result with the plain SIP Calculator: the extra value comes both from the larger amounts invested and from their growth. If your income rises steadily, a step-up keeps your savings rate from shrinking.

## Assumptions and limits
- Each instalment is invested at the start of the month, the convention used in Indian SIP illustrations.
- The return is constant and compounds monthly.
- The step-up happens every 12 months from the first instalment.
- Mutual fund returns are not guaranteed and vary from year to year.
- Expense ratios, exit loads and taxes are not deducted.

## Questions

### What step-up percentage should I choose?

Many investors match their expected pay rise, often 5–10%. A fixed rupee step-up grows more slowly in percentage terms as the SIP gets larger.

### Can I change the step-up later?

Yes. Most fund houses let you add, change or stop a top-up instruction; check your AMC’s rules.
