Stamp duty is charged in one of three ways: a single rate on the whole price, marginal bands where each slice is taxed at its own rate, or a slab where the band the price falls in sets the rate for the whole price. Enter the current rates for your state or country.

Also called: Transfer duty calculator, Property transfer tax estimator.

## Inputs
- Property price or dutiable value (default 600000)
- How the duty is charged (options: One rate on the whole price, Marginal bands (each slice at its rate), Slab (band rate on the whole price); default marginal)
- Stamp duty rate (unit %; default 3)
- Band 1: up to (default 100000)
- Band 1 rate (unit %; default 1)
- Band 2: up to (default 500000)
- Band 2 rate (unit %; default 3)
- Band 3: up to (default 1000000)
- Band 3 rate (unit %; default 5)
- Rate above band 3 (unit %; default 7)
- Registration fee (unit %; default 1; optional)
- Registration fee cap (default ; optional)
- Other fixed fees (default 500; optional)
- Currency

## Results
- Stamp duty
- Registration fee
- Total duty and fees
- Effective duty rate
- Total as % of price

## Formula

```
Flat: Duty = Value × Rate.  Marginal: Duty = Σ (part of value inside band k × Rate k).  Slab: Duty = Value × Rate of the band containing Value.  Registration = min(Value × Reg%, Cap);  Total = Duty + Registration + Other fees
```

Where:
- Value: the price or the value the authority uses, whichever applies
- Rate k: the rate for band k, as published by your authority

## Worked example
1. First 100,000 at 1% = 1,000.
2. Next 400,000 at 3% = 12,000.
3. Last 100,000 at 5% = 5,000, so duty = 18,000 (3% effective).
4. Add 1% registration (6,000) and 500 of fees: total 24,500.

**Result:** With these example bands, duty on 600,000 is 18,000 and the total with registration and fees is 24,500.

## What the result means

The example bands are illustrative only. Stamp duty is set by each country or state and changes often, with surcharges and reliefs (first-time buyers, additional homes, non-residents, women buyers in some places) that this estimate does not apply unless you build them into the rates you enter.

## Assumptions and limits
- You enter the current rates, bands and fees for your jurisdiction; none are built in.
- Duty is charged on the value you enter.
- Concessions, surcharges, minimum duties and rounding rules of particular authorities are not applied.
- Up to three bands plus a top rate are supported.

## Questions

### What is the difference between marginal and slab duty?

With marginal bands, only the part of the price above each threshold pays the higher rate. With a slab, crossing a threshold raises the rate on the whole price, so a small price change can cause a big jump in duty.

### Where do I find the current rates?

Use the official revenue office, tax authority or land registry website for your state or country. They also list reliefs you may qualify for.
