Your leave balance is what you have earned (plus anything carried over) minus what you have taken. Choose whether your employer gives the full year’s leave up front or lets it build up month by month.

Also called: Leave balance calculator, PTO balance calculator, Holiday entitlement remaining calculator.

## Inputs
- Annual leave entitlement (unit days; default 25)
- Days carried over from last year (unit days; default 3; optional)
- How leave is given (options: All at the start, Builds up monthly; default accrual)
- Months of the leave year completed (unit months; default 6)
- Days already taken (unit days; default 8; optional)
- Days booked but not yet taken (unit days; default 5; optional)

## Results
- Balance available now
- Earned so far (incl. carry-over)
- Still to book this leave year
- Total for the year
- Taken or booked

## Formula

```
Earned now = Carry-over + Entitlement × Months ÷ 12 (or the full entitlement if given up front);  Balance = Earned − Taken;  Still to book = Carry-over + Entitlement − Taken − Booked
```

Where:
- Entitlement: days of leave per full leave year
- Months: months of the leave year completed so far
- Taken: days already used
- Booked: approved future leave

## Worked example
1. Earned = 3 + 25 × 6 ÷ 12 = 3 + 12.5 = 15.5 days.
2. Balance now = 15.5 − 8 taken = 7.5 days.
3. Still to book = 3 + 25 − 8 − 5 = 15 days.

**Result:** Halfway through the year you have earned 15.5 days, 7.5 of which are unused, and 15 days of the year’s 28 are still unbooked.

## What the result means

A negative balance means you have used leave before earning it. That is usually allowed during the year, but some contracts let the employer recover it from final pay if you leave early.

## Assumptions and limits
- Leave accrues evenly across the leave year.
- Carried-over days are available in full from the start of the year.
- Public holidays, carry-over caps, expiry dates and rounding rules differ by employer and country and are not applied.

## Questions

### Does accrued leave include public holidays?

Only if your contract counts them in the entitlement. Enter the entitlement figure your employer uses.

### What if my leave year does not start in January?

Count months from the start of your leave year, for example from April for an April–March leave year.
