How to use this calculator
- Enter or choose amount today.
- Enter or choose inflation rate (per year).
- Enter or choose years ahead.
- The future cost of the same goods updates as you type. Use Copy result or Share to keep it.
Formula
Future cost = A × (1 + i)^t; real value = A ÷ (1 + i)^t
- A
- amount today
- i
- annual inflation rate as a decimal
- t
- years
Worked example
- A = 100, i = 0.03, t = 10.
- 1.03^10 = 1.3439.
- Future cost = 100 × 1.3439 = 134.39; real value = 100 ÷ 1.3439 = 74.41.
Prices rise about 34% over ten years at 3% inflation.
What the result means
Use the future cost to set savings goals for expenses years away, such as education. Use the real value to judge whether a fixed amount, like a pension, will keep its buying power.
Assumptions and limits
- A constant inflation rate every year.
- Actual inflation varies year to year and differs by category; healthcare and education often rise faster than the headline rate.
- This is a projection, not historical CPI data for a specific country.
Questions
Where can I find the actual inflation rate?
National statistics agencies publish consumer price index (CPI) data: for example the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and India’s Ministry of Statistics (MoSPI).
What inflation rate should I assume for planning?
Many central banks target around 2–4%. Use a higher rate for categories like education or healthcare.
