How to use this calculator
- Enter or choose room length.
- Enter or choose room width.
- Enter or choose tile length (along the room).
- Enter or choose tile width.
- Enter or choose waste allowance.
- The tiles to buy updates as you type. Use Copy result or Share to keep it.
Method
Tiles = ⌈L ÷ tile length⌉ × ⌈W ÷ tile width⌉ × (1 + waste); Wall angle = ⌈2(L + W) × (1 + waste) ÷ piece length⌉
- L, W
- room length and width
- waste
- allowance for breakage and spares
Worked example
- Along: 6 ÷ 0.6 = 10 tiles; across: 4 ÷ 0.6 = 6.67 → 7 tiles.
- Tiles = 10 × 7 = 70, which is 5 boxes of 16.
- Perimeter = 2 × (6 + 4) = 20 m → 7 pieces of 3 m.
A 6 × 4 m room needs 70 tiles of 600 × 600 mm (5 boxes) and 7 lengths of 3 m wall angle.
What the result means
Centring the grid so border tiles are at least half a tile looks better; it can add a row in each direction, so check the setting-out before ordering.
Assumptions and limits
- Each cut border tile uses a whole tile.
- Main runners, cross tees and hangers depend on the grid system and are not counted.
Questions
How many 600 × 600 tiles per m²?
Each tile is 0.36 m², so about 2.78 tiles per m² before cuts and waste.
Can offcuts be reused?
Rarely: the edge profile is on the factory edge, so cut pieces usually only fit at the room perimeter.
Please note: Quantities are estimates. Confirm requirements with your engineer or supplier before ordering materials.
