Math solver with steps

Type an equation or a calculation and get the answer with every step shown. Linear and quadratic equations are checked by substituting the answer back in.

Try an example

What it solves

  • Arithmetic — whole numbers, decimals and fractions (kept exact, so 1/3 + 1/6 = 1/2), brackets, powers, square and cube roots, percentages (“15% of 240”), factorials, logarithms and trigonometry.
  • Linear equations in one unknown, such as 3(x − 2) = 2x + 5, including brackets and fractions.
  • Quadratic equations such as x² − 5x + 6 = 0, with the discriminant, exact roots or simplified surds, and complex roots when there are no real ones.

It does not yet solve equations with the unknown in a denominator, systems of equations, inequalities, or equations of degree three and above. It says so instead of guessing.

How the answers are checked

The solver reads your problem with a fixed grammar (it never runs code you type), keeps fractions exact where it can, and shows each operation in the standard order: brackets, powers, multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction. Every answer to an equation is substituted back into your original equation; if the two sides do not match, no answer is shown.

Trigonometry uses radians unless you mark the angle with ° (for example sin(30°)). Decimal answers are rounded to about 10 significant digits.

Privacy: unlike the calculators, which run in your browser, the solver works on our server, so your problem is sent in the page address. We do not store it. See the privacy policy.
