How to use this calculator

- Enter or choose fabric weight.
- Enter or choose fabric width.
- Enter or choose width in.
- The price per metre updates as you type. Use Copy result or Share to keep it.
Method
kg per metre = GSM × Width (m) ÷ 1,000; Price per metre = Price per kg × kg per metre; Price per yard = Price per metre × 0.9144
- GSM
- grams per square metre
- Width
- fabric width in metres (1 inch = 2.54 cm)
Worked example
- Weight per metre = 180 × 1.5 ÷ 1,000 = 0.27 kg.
- Price per metre = 6.50 × 0.27 = 1.755 ≈ 1.76.
- Price per yard = 1.755 × 0.9144 = 1.60.
A 180 GSM, 150 cm fabric at 6.50 per kg costs about 1.76 per metre or 1.60 per yard.
What the result means
Use the per-metre price to compare suppliers who quote differently, and to cost garments whose consumption is measured by length.
Assumptions and limits
- GSM is the weight of the finished fabric as delivered.
- GSM varies within a lot, typically by a few per cent, which changes the metres you get per kg by the same proportion.
Questions
Why does a heavier fabric cost more per metre at the same price per kg?
Each metre weighs more, so you pay for more kilograms per metre.
What width should I use for tubular knits?
The open width, which is twice the tube width, because GSM applies to a single layer.
