How to use this calculator
- Enter or choose find.
- Enter or choose fabric GSM.
- Enter or choose fabric width.
- Enter or choose core and packing weight.
- The net fabric weight updates as you type. Use Copy result or Share to keep it.
Method
g per metre = GSM × Width (m); Net kg = Length (m) × g per metre ÷ 1000; Length = (Gross − Core) × 1000 ÷ g per metre
- GSM
- grams per square metre
- Core
- tube and wrapping weight
- 1 yd
- 0.9144 m
Worked example
- Weight per metre = 180 g/m² × 1.80 m = 324 g.
- Net = 100 m × 324 g = 32.4 kg; gross = 32.4 + 1.5 = 33.9 kg.
- 100 m ÷ 0.9144 = 109.36 yd.
A 100 m roll of 180 GSM fabric, 180 cm wide, weighs 32.4 kg net, 33.9 kg with a 1.5 kg core.
What the result means
Knits are usually sold by weight and wovens by length; this converts between the two for a given GSM and width.
Assumptions and limits
- GSM and width are uniform along the roll.
- Actual GSM varies within tolerance, so metres from weight are an estimate; measure on an inspection machine for invoicing.
Questions
How many metres are in 1 kg of fabric?
1000 ÷ (GSM × width in m). For 180 GSM, 1.8 m wide: 1000 ÷ 324 = 3.09 m per kg.
Should I include the core?
Enter the core and packing weight to get net fabric from a gross scale reading.
