Method
Pavers per area = 1 ÷ [(a + j)(b + j)]; Pavers = ⌈L × W × Pavers per area × (1 + Waste)⌉; Sand = L × W × Bed
- a, b
- paver length and width
- j
- joint width
Worked example
- One paver = 0.2 × 0.1 = 0.02 m², so 50 per m².
- 6 × 4 = 24 m² × 50 = 1200 pavers; with 5% waste = 1260.
- Bedding sand = 24 × 0.03 = 0.72 m³.
A 6 × 4 m patio in 200 × 100 mm pavers needs 1260 pavers and about 0.72 m³ of bedding sand.
What the result means
Shaped interlocking pavers state their own count per m² on the data sheet; use that if it differs. Order sand loose and allow extra for compaction and jointing sand.
Assumptions and limits
- Rectangular pavers on a rectangular area.
- Edge restraints, sub-base and jointing sand are not included.
Questions
How many pavers per square metre?
For a 200 × 100 mm paver, 50 per m² with tight joints; slightly fewer with wider joints.
How thick should the sand bed be?
Commonly 25–40 mm after compaction, but follow the paver manufacturer’s guidance.
