How to use this calculator
- Enter or choose row spacing.
- Enter or choose plant spacing in the row.
- Enter or choose spacing in.
- Enter or choose plants per hill or station.
- Enter or choose field area.
- The plants per acre updates as you type. Use Copy result or Share to keep it.
Method
Plants per m² = Plants per hill ÷ (Row spacing × Plant spacing, in m); Per hectare = × 10,000; Per acre = × 4,046.86
- Row spacing
- distance between rows
- Plant spacing
- distance between plants (or hills) along the row
- Plants per hill
- plants at each planting station
Worked example
- Area per plant = 0.75 m × 0.20 m = 0.15 m².
- Per hectare = 10,000 ÷ 0.15 = 66,667; per acre = 4,046.86 ÷ 0.15 = 26,979.
- For 5 acres: 26,979.04 × 5 = 134,895 plants.
At 75 × 20 cm spacing there are about 66,667 plants per hectare, or 26,979 per acre, which is 134,895 plants on 5 acres.
What the result means
This is the planted population. The stand you harvest is lower after germination failures and losses, so compare it with your target established population.
Assumptions and limits
- Spacing is uniform across the field, with no headlands or paths.
- For bed or paired-row systems, use the average row spacing across one full repeat.
Questions
Why is my count lower in the field?
Not every seed emerges and some seedlings die. Divide the planted population by your expected establishment to set the seed rate.
How do I handle paired rows?
Use the width of one full repeat (the pair plus its gap) divided by the number of rows in it as the average row spacing.
