How to use this calculator
- Enter or choose bill amount.
- Enter or choose tip.
- Enter or choose split between.
- The total to pay updates as you type. Use Copy result or Share to keep it.
Method
Tip = Bill × Tip% ÷ 100; Total = Bill + Tip; Per person = Total ÷ People
- Bill
- the amount before the tip
- Tip%
- the tip percentage
- People
- how many people share the bill
Worked example
- Tip = 80 × 15 ÷ 100 = $12.
- Total = 80 + 12 = $92.
- Split between 2 people: 92 ÷ 2 = $46 each.
A 15% tip on an $80 bill is $12, so the total is $92, or $46 each for two people.
What the result means
Tipping customs vary a lot by country and by type of service. In some places a service charge is already on the bill, in which case an extra tip is optional.
Assumptions and limits
- The tip is a percentage of the bill amount you enter, whether that is before or after tax.
- The total is split equally.
- Shares are rounded to the cent, so the individual amounts can differ from the total by a cent or two.
Questions
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Either is common. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is slightly cheaper; enter whichever amount you want the tip based on.
How do I work out 20% quickly?
Move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it. For $45, 10% is $4.50, so 20% is $9.
