How to use this calculator

  1. Enter or choose carts created.
  2. Enter or choose completed purchases.
  3. Enter or choose average abandoned cart value.
  4. Enter or choose expected recovery rate.
  5. The cart abandonment rate updates as you type. Use Copy result or Share to keep it.

Method

Abandonment rate = (Carts − Purchases) ÷ Carts × 100; Value left = Abandoned carts × Cart value; Recovered = Value left × Recovery%

Carts
carts (or checkouts) started in the period
Purchases
orders completed from those carts

Worked example

  1. Abandoned = 5000 − 1500 = 3500, so the rate is 3500 ÷ 5000 = 70%.
  2. Value left = 3500 × 80 = 280,000.
  3. Recovering 5% brings back 14,000.

A 70% abandonment rate leaves $280,000 in carts; recovering 5% of them is worth $14,000.

What the result means

The value left in carts is an upper bound, not lost revenue: many shoppers use carts to compare or save items. Use the recovered figure to judge whether a reminder campaign is worth its cost.

Assumptions and limits

  • Abandoned carts have the average value you enter.
  • Shoppers who return later in a new session may be counted as both an abandonment and a purchase.

Questions

Carts or checkouts?

Cart abandonment uses carts created; checkout abandonment uses checkouts started. Checkout abandonment is lower and closer to purchase intent.

Should recovered revenue count as profit?

No: subtract product cost, discounts offered and the campaign’s cost to see its profit.
