How to use this calculator

  1. Enter or choose revenue.
  2. Enter or choose number of orders.
  3. Enter or choose units sold.
  4. The average order value updates as you type. Use Copy result or Share to keep it.

Method

AOV = Revenue ÷ Orders; Units per order = Units ÷ Orders; Average unit price = Revenue ÷ Units (so AOV = Units per order × Unit price)

Revenue
sales in the period on a consistent basis
Orders
number of orders in the same period

Worked example

  1. AOV = 125,000 ÷ 2500 = 50.
  2. Units per order = 6250 ÷ 2500 = 2.5, and unit price = 125,000 ÷ 6250 = 20.

2,500 orders worth $125,000 is an average order value of $50: 2.5 items at $20 each.

What the result means

AOV moves either because people buy more items or because they buy pricier ones; the split shows which lever changed. Bundles and free-shipping thresholds mainly lift units per order.

Assumptions and limits

  • Revenue and orders cover the same period and the same channel.
  • A few very large orders can pull the average up; check the median order too.

Questions

Should AOV include tax and shipping?

Either can work, but be consistent. Many teams exclude tax and shipping so AOV reflects merchandise sold.

Do cancelled orders count?

Exclude cancelled and fully refunded orders from both revenue and order count.
