How to use this calculator
- Enter or choose vehicles in the fleet.
- Enter or choose days in the period.
- Enter or choose vehicle-days in use.
- Enter or choose vehicle-days unavailable (optional).
- The fleet utilisation updates as you type. Use Copy result or Share to keep it.
Method
Total = Vehicles × Days; Available = Total − Unavailable; Utilisation = Used ÷ Total × 100; Availability = Available ÷ Total × 100
- Used
- vehicle-days on which a vehicle worked
- Unavailable
- vehicle-days lost to maintenance or repair
Worked example
- Total = 20 × 30 = 600 vehicle-days; available = 600 − 40 = 560.
- Utilisation = 476 ÷ 600 = 79.33%; of available days, 476 ÷ 560 = 85%.
- Availability = 560 ÷ 600 = 93.33%.
The fleet worked 79.33% of its vehicle-days, 85% of the days vehicles were available.
What the result means
Low utilisation of available vehicles suggests the fleet is larger than the work needs; low availability points at maintenance. Persistent idle vehicle-days are candidates for disposal or short-term hire instead.
Assumptions and limits
- A vehicle counts as used for a whole day if it worked at all that day.
- Day-based utilisation ignores how many hours or kilometres each vehicle ran; use hours or distance for finer measures.
Questions
Should weekends count?
Count only days the vehicles are meant to be available; otherwise utilisation looks low by design.
