Method
Months: end = the same date N months later (last day of the month if it does not exist). Weeks or days: end = Given + Length. End-of-month rule: move the end to the last day of that month.
- Given
- the day notice is handed in
- N
- notice length
Worked example
- Notice starts on 11 March 2026, the day after it is given.
- One month after 10 March is 10 April 2026, a Friday.
- Weekdays from 11 March to 10 April: 3 + 4 × 5 = 23.
One month’s notice given on 10 March 2026 ends on Friday 10 April 2026, 31 calendar days or 23 weekdays later.
What the result means
The end date is when employment ends. Holiday taken during notice, garden leave or pay in lieu can change your last day in the office but not, by itself, the contractual end date.
Assumptions and limits
- Notice is counted in calendar time starting the day after it is given.
- Public holidays are not removed from the weekday count.
- Statutory minimum notice and the way notice is counted vary by country and contract; the contract wording and local law prevail.
Questions
Do weekends count in a notice period?
Usually yes: notice in weeks or months runs in calendar time. The weekday count is shown for planning handovers.
What if notice ends on a Saturday?
Employment still ends on that date, but your last working day is normally the Friday before.
