How to use this calculator

  2. Enter or choose days carried over from last year.
  3. Enter or choose how leave is given.
  4. Enter or choose days already taken.

Method

Earned now = Carry-over + Entitlement × Months ÷ 12 (or the full entitlement if given up front); Balance = Earned − Taken; Still to book = Carry-over + Entitlement − Taken − Booked

Entitlement
days of leave per full leave year
Months
months of the leave year completed so far
Taken
days already used
Booked
approved future leave

Worked example

  1. Earned = 3 + 25 × 6 ÷ 12 = 3 + 12.5 = 15.5 days.
  2. Balance now = 15.5 − 8 taken = 7.5 days.
  3. Still to book = 3 + 25 − 8 − 5 = 15 days.

Halfway through the year you have earned 15.5 days, 7.5 of which are unused, and 15 days of the year’s 28 are still unbooked.

What the result means

A negative balance means you have used leave before earning it. That is usually allowed during the year, but some contracts let the employer recover it from final pay if you leave early.

Assumptions and limits

  • Leave accrues evenly across the leave year.
  • Carried-over days are available in full from the start of the year.
  • Public holidays, carry-over caps, expiry dates and rounding rules differ by employer and country and are not applied.

Questions

Does accrued leave include public holidays?

Only if your contract counts them in the entitlement. Enter the entitlement figure your employer uses.

What if my leave year does not start in January?

Count months from the start of your leave year, for example from April for an April–March leave year.
