How to use this calculator
- Enter or choose current grade (before the final).
- Enter or choose final exam weight.
- Enter or choose target course grade.
- The score needed on the final updates as you type. Use Copy result or Share to keep it.
Method
Needed = (T − C × (1 − w)) ÷ w
- T
- target course grade (%)
- C
- current grade on everything except the final (%)
- w
- final exam weight as a fraction
Worked example
- The non-final part contributes 82 × 0.7 = 57.4 points.
- Needed = (85 − 57.4) ÷ 0.3 = 27.6 ÷ 0.3 = 92%.
- With 100% on the final the course grade would be 57.4 + 30 = 87.4%.
With 82% so far and a final worth 30%, you need 92% on the final to finish with 85%.
What the result means
A required score above 100% means the target is out of reach unless there is extra credit; a score at or below 0% means the target is already secured.
Assumptions and limits
- Your current grade already reflects the weights of every non-final item.
- Courses with a pass-the-final rule, curves or dropped lowest scores need their own adjustments.
Questions
What if my teacher’s weights add up to more than the final plus coursework?
Use the Weighted Assignment Score Calculator to work out your current grade first, then enter it here.
Can I use this with points instead of percentages?
Convert your points to a percentage first (points earned ÷ points possible × 100).
