How to use this calculator

  1. Add a grade and credits for each course; leave unused rows blank.
  2. The weighted score updates as you type. Use Copy result or Share to keep it.

Method

Weighted score = Σ wᵢ × (eᵢ ÷ pᵢ) ÷ Σ wᵢ × 100; Points score = Σ eᵢ ÷ Σ pᵢ × 100

eᵢ
points earned on item i
pᵢ
points possible on item i
wᵢ
weight of item i

Worked example

  1. Item scores: 45/50 = 90%, 34/40 = 85%, 70/100 = 70%.
  2. Weighted = 0.20 × 90 + 0.30 × 85 + 0.50 × 70 = 18 + 25.5 + 35 = 78.5%.
  3. Total points = 149 ÷ 190 = 78.42% for comparison.

With weights of 20%, 30% and 50%, these scores give a weighted 78.5% (78.42% on raw points).

What the result means

When the weights match your syllabus, the weighted score is your course grade so far. The points score shows what a points-based teacher would record instead.

Assumptions and limits

  • Each row is one item or one category total with its syllabus weight.
  • Dropped lowest scores, extra credit and curves are not applied.

Questions

My weights only add to 60% so far. Is that a problem?

No. The calculator scales by the weights entered, giving your grade on the work completed so far.

Should I enter each homework or the category total?

Either. For category weights, enter the category’s total points earned and possible with the category weight.
