- Enter or choose band 1: up to.
- Enter or choose band 1 rate.
- Enter or choose band 2: up to.
- The stamp duty updates as you type. Use Copy result or Share to keep it.
Method
Flat: Duty = Value × Rate. Marginal: Duty = Σ (part of value inside band k × Rate k). Slab: Duty = Value × Rate of the band containing Value. Registration = min(Value × Reg%, Cap); Total = Duty + Registration + Other fees
- Value
- the price or the value the authority uses, whichever applies
- Rate k
- the rate for band k, as published by your authority
Worked example
- First 100,000 at 1% = 1,000.
- Next 400,000 at 3% = 12,000.
- Last 100,000 at 5% = 5,000, so duty = 18,000 (3% effective).
- Add 1% registration (6,000) and 500 of fees: total 24,500.
With these example bands, duty on 600,000 is 18,000 and the total with registration and fees is 24,500.
What the result means
The example bands are illustrative only. Stamp duty is set by each country or state and changes often, with surcharges and reliefs (first-time buyers, additional homes, non-residents, women buyers in some places) that this estimate does not apply unless you build them into the rates you enter.
Assumptions and limits
- You enter the current rates, bands and fees for your jurisdiction; none are built in.
- Duty is charged on the value you enter.
- Concessions, surcharges, minimum duties and rounding rules of particular authorities are not applied.
- Up to three bands plus a top rate are supported.
Questions
What is the difference between marginal and slab duty?
With marginal bands, only the part of the price above each threshold pays the higher rate. With a slab, crossing a threshold raises the rate on the whole price, so a small price change can cause a big jump in duty.
Where do I find the current rates?
Use the official revenue office, tax authority or land registry website for your state or country. They also list reliefs you may qualify for.
