How to use this calculator
- Enter or choose shipments with a first attempt.
- Enter or choose delivered on the first attempt.
- Enter or choose cost per failed first attempt.
- The first attempt delivery rate updates as you type. Use Copy result or Share to keep it.
Method
FADR = Delivered first time ÷ Shipments with a first attempt × 100; Failed = Attempted − Delivered first time; Cost = Failed × Cost per failure
- Shipments with a first attempt
- out-for-delivery shipments that reached a first attempt in the period (excludes ones never dispatched)
Worked example
- FADR = 10,920 ÷ 12,000 × 100 = 91%.
- Failed first attempts = 12,000 − 10,920 = 1,080.
- Cost = 1,080 × 4.50 = 4,860.
A 91% first attempt rate means 1,080 shipments needed another try, costing about 4,860.
What the result means
Every point of FADR gained removes a re-attempt for 1% of volume. Track the reasons for failure (not home, wrong address, access) to target the fix: delivery windows, address validation or safe-place options.
Assumptions and limits
- Each failed shipment costs the same amount.
- Definitions vary between carriers; keep the same denominator over time when comparing periods.
Questions
Should customer-requested reschedules count as failures?
Decide once and be consistent. Many operators exclude customer-requested changes made before the first attempt.
Is FADR the same as on-time delivery?
No. A parcel can be delivered on the first attempt but late, or on time on the second attempt.
